How Can He Be Seven?

Seven years ago today I held my little 4 pound baby for the first time. As I looked at his sweet face, I felt I recognized him somehow, I knew him. It was love at first sight!

Now here we are, seven years later, and I am amazed that my little Joshua can be so grown up.

Joshua still has that quiet, cheerful disposition he had as a baby. He always seems to have a good attitude, looking for the positives in any situation. His teachers have commented that when asked how he is doing, he always gives an enthusiastic "terrific" or other exclamation!

While he still entertains himself quite well and often prefers to play alone, he has started to appreciate social activities as well. For so long he was clueless about other people around him, but has really grown this year. Last week he received a class award for helping a friend. I asked him about it and he told me one of the new boys  was feeling very nervous about play time outside, so Joshua asked him to play with him.

Becoming a big brother was not easy for Joshua when his little sister began getting into his stuff. Now he loves playing with Abigail, and adores Micah. He is always excited to greet his little brother after school, and makes sure to have at least one "conversation" with him every day.

He is so creative in his imaginative play. When he gets excited about something, it comes out in everything he does. For example, he has recently gotten in to the Legend of Zelda video games. It was not long before he and Abigail were dressing up like Link and going on quests.

Joshua loves to read, and, like his father, he enjoys writing his own short stories. Some of his favorite books continue to be the Magic Tree House series. And, much like his mother, Joshua loves to make lists about everything.

In line with his very methodical personality, Joshua demonstrates a strength for building things ... whether with legos, building blocks, magnetix, and more. He especially loves to follow instructions carefully to create things he sees on the packaging or manuals. But he is beginning to improvise on the instructions when he finds another interesting way to connect the parts.

So, Joshua turns seven years old today. We are so proud of him, and continue to pray for God to use him for His glory.

Happy Birthday, Joshua!

Micah Turns Four Months Old

Little Micah is four months old today! I am amazed at how quickly the time has passed.

Micah continues to be a smiley, easy-going little guy, and loves attention. About two weeks ago, he laughed for the first time. His laughs are still not an everyday occurrence, but are becoming more frequent as he grows older. Joshua and Abigail can hardly wait to make him laugh, especially Joshua who is really into physical comedy.

He is still my snuggle bug, consistently enjoying a good cuddle more than my other did by this age.

Everyday Micah's sleep gets a little bit better.  He sleeps in his own bed now, and has finally figured out how to sleep for more than just a few minutes without being held. There are times when he will sleep for a good 7 hour stretch, but these have not become the norm yet.
I do love that he sleeps for 12 hours at night, going immediately back to sleep after feedings. Now we just need to move his bed time to a reasonable time of night. In the last two weeks we have gone from being up until after midnight to going down for the night at around 10:30pm. It can only get better from here, right?

Next week he will visit the Health Visitor again for a well visit. We'll get an update on his stats and he will get his next round of immunizations. I'll let you know how big he has gotten.

What I know now is that he is a good eater, and has grown too tall for most of his clothes.

He continues to be a cheerful, sweet blessing and we are so thankful that he is part of our family.

Beef Sesame Noodles

This recipe has become one of our favorites. It is based on Miss Mommy's recipe, but altered to fit my family's veggie preference.
  •     1/4 c soy sauce
  •     1/2 c beef broth
  •     1 Tbsp grated fresh ginger
  •     2 tsp dark sesame oil
  •     1/4 tsp sugar
  •     14-oz green beans (I sometimes use frozen, but wok them before the other veggies)
  •     1 onion, sliced into wedges
  •     1/4 pound mushrooms, quartered
  •     1/2 pound thinly sliced deli roast beef, cut into 2 inch strips
  •     10-oz Japanese curly noodles
  •     1 Tbsp Sesame Seeds
Combine first 5 ingredients for sauce.
Wok the veggies in oil until tender.
Cook noodles while veggies are frying.
Stir in beef and sauce to the veggies.
Add noodles and mix well.
Top with sesame seeds and serve.

3 months old

That's right! Micah is three month old today! I can hardly believe how quickly the time has passed.

Our sweet little boy is easy-going and quick to give smiles. He is always happy when someone stops long enough to pay attention to him and will reward them with coos and joy.

Great example... in the grocery store yesterday with all three kids, I was not about to abandon my entire cart full when Micah started fussing. Having grabbed our final item, we quickly unloaded the food onto the conveyer belt, but the fact that Micah could no longer see me made him really start crying.

A sweet lady passing by with her teenage kids caught his eye and he stopped crying. She realized that he was watching her carefully, so she and her two kids took a few minutes out of their busy shopping trip to entertain my baby while I unloaded groceries.

Micah is not a fan on tummy time, though he tolerates it much better when Joshua joins him on the floor (which is every time he can). He seems to have a strong neck to me and loves to stand on my lap (with support, of coarse).

We are still working on sleep with this boy. He is getting better, slowly. This past week it has started to feel like he wants a little more structure, so when the kids head back to school next week (after two weeks off) I'm going to work on scheduling his naps more. At night, he is so much better at sleeping in his bassinet next to the bed. I can tell we are going to have to be much more planned and deliberate about sleep training this baby.

Micah is such a wonderful addition to our family. He has cuddled his way into our hearts and I can hardly image life without him!

Micah is 10 weeks old!

Micah turned 10 weeks old yesterday! I am amazed at how quickly the time has gone. Here is a picture of him prepared for a crisp autumn morning walk to take the big kids to school.

Ready for a crisp autumn morning walk to school.
He had his first doctor's visit since he was born. And he got his first jabs (shots) for immunizations. Everything looks great, including his heart and hips (which they seem to pay close attention to in his exam).

Here are his updated stats:
   ~ Weigh: 5.560kg (12lb 5.5oz) - 35 percentile
   ~ Height: 61cm (24 inches) - 80 percentile

He is a tall, but little guy (I can hardly believe he is already 2 feet tall). He wears a great double chin, but is still working on gaining all his leg rolls.

Joshua and Abigail continue to dote on their little brother, and he rewards them with wonderful smiles. He has Joshua's expressions - sometimes he reminds me so much of Joshua. But then he smiles and looks so much like Abigail. Needless to say he looks like his big brother and big sister.

Micah has added wonderful joy to our family! We are excited about the years to come!

The Queen!

This picture is courtesy of my friend Lydia.
The Queen and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, came to Aberdeen for the first time in 10 years to celebrate the opening of the new University Library and the remodel of the historic Marischal College building (now housing Aberdeen City Council). This was our chance to see the Queen in person, an opportunity that the kids especially were so excited to take.

We hiked down to the University Library to stake our a place on the fence and waited for about 90 minutes for the Queen to come. During our wait it poured down rain and the wind whipped around us, but still we waited.

We were hoping that the Queen would walk part of the way down the sidewalk leading to the library, but I think the weather eliminated any chance of that. Instead, her car just drove past us, up the the very doors of the library. All we caught was a quick glimpse of her in the passing car.

The kids were disappointed, since neither actually saw her through the windows. So we braved the weather a little longer and pushed our way up to the library doors to wait for her to exit again.

Finally, the Queen and her husband left the building and headed for their car. Abigail was up on Darren's shoulders for a good view. Joshua was being held up  by a kind student near the fence; she heard his sweet pleas to see the Queen and offered to let his come to the fence line and held him sitting on the fence so he could see. Both kids got to watch her get back into her car.

It was a crazy wet day, but so worth the wait. The kids (especially Joshua) were so happy and excited in spite of the fact that they were soaked. And  Micah managed to sleep in the baby Bjorn the entire time. Check out the rest of my pics on Facebook.

Micah turns 8 weeks old!

It seems incredible that our little baby is already 8 weeks old! Micah is becoming a social little boy who loves his big brother and sister, often rewarding their attention with big smiles.

Micah is beginning to show a very sweet, tolerant personality ... as long as he isn't tired. He smiles and coos with the kids. He easily entertains himself in his bouncy seat. He is an easy-going little guy. But once he hits the point where he would rather be sleeping, all bets are off.

He doesn't (and never has) just drifted off to sleep when he needs a nap. Instead he calls loudly to the world to help him fall asleep. A little comfort, and some standing and bouncing, and he drifts off to sleep. We are still working on him staying asleep for more than 30 to 40 minutes on his own... including at night.

This little boy just loves to sleep in mommy's or daddy's arms. It is a good thing I love snuggling! But if you think of us, pray for wisdom, strength and patience.

On another topic, this Friday is Darren's deadline for turning in his thesis! He is continuing to work crazy hours to finish in time for printing and binding before handing it over to the registrar. Once the thesis is in hand, the University will contact his proposed examiners to set a viva date for the oral defense of his thesis.

It is hard to believe that it was three years ago today that we boarded a plane headed for Aberdeen, Scotland. How quickly time has passed! We have loved our time here and made life-long friends. In just a few short months we will move back to the US for whatever God has planned next. But we will always have a soft spot for Scotland!

Six Weeks!

Micah is six weeks old this week, and we all love him to pieces. He has started to sleep a little longer at night (four and five hour stretches), though he still prefers to be held... all the time. I don't get much done, but I do get lots of precious snuggles. Bath time has finally become tolerable, though not 'fun' yet. Last night he didn't cry and actually relaxed during bath! We have been amazed at how strong his neck is for a such a young guy! And he really likes to work his legs by standing on my lap.

In other news, Abigail has started going full days to school! They phase in the new P1 (kindergarten) class with half days for the first several weeks. She was so excited that she finally got to eat lunch at school. She is so full of energy and enthusiasm, though it takes a little more effort for her to really focus on the task at hand. Even though there is not nearly as much play time, she thoroughly enjoys her new class and teacher.

Joshua is as positive and happy about school as ever. He always tells me that his day was excellent (or some other such adjective)! His new teacher transferred up from England and still seems to be getting use to the Scottish school and curriculum, but Joshua really likes him. There just hasn't been much communication with parents yet. But we have open house on Thursday and I look forward to hearing more about what they have been and are going to be working on.

Darren is working long hours these days, well into the evening and night. I am thankful that he takes the kids to school in the morning before hitting his thesis. He is suppose to be submitting by the end of the month and will then spend the next few months studying for his viva (oral defense), prepping and teaching classes, writing a paper for AAR in November, and all those other things he on his plate.

My days just got simpler with Abigail and Joshua both in school full days. I have 6 hours with just Micah. It is nice to have one-on-one time with him. I am working to be productive with most of the time, though it is hard when he has to be held so much, and takes so long to eat. I am just going to relax and enjoy this short time as a baby ... the housework and errands will have to wait.

As we head in to autumn weather, I am looking forward to falling leaves, hot drinks, warm soup and more snuggles with the kids. Life is good!

Micah is 5 weeks old!

Micah turned 5 weeks old yesterday and is growing so quickly. At our health visitor check up today he weighed 9 pounds 9 ounces, consistently staying in the 35th percentile.

Micah gave us his first smiles this week. So sweet! He looks a lot like Joshua in some expressions, but his smile is much more like Abigail.

This little boy really loves to be held ... all the time! I rarely get to do anything these days with both hands. One hand is almost always tied up with a baby. I am getting faster at typing one handed, though doing dishes and cooking still prove problematic.

Hopefully as we approach the 6 week age Micah's sleep will begin to level out. He is consistently doing one longer sleep session at night (around 4 to 5 hours); too bad this tends to be at the beginning of the night (starting around 7pm), so I don't normally get to bed early enough to benefit from it.

His favorite places to sleep are on the couch, in the stroller, in the car or in mommy's arms. We are still working on getting more than a few minutes duration in his own bed, but that will come a little later.

Micah is a fantastic eater. I have really enjoyed his enthusiasm and efficiency. We have had no problems nursing this time around, which is a refreshing change to the various struggles in the beginning with my two big kids.

He was born with so much dark hair, which you could even see standing on end in some of the ultrasound scans. Now the hair on top is beginning to fall out, so he looks a little bald in comparison. But it looks like the short hair growing back is going to be dark as well.

Everyone in the family is thrilled with our new baby. Joshua and Abigail love on him and always want to hold him. They have been great helpers and love to do anything they can for Micah. We all love our little Micah and are so thankful God has given him to our family!

Life keeps moving...

So much has happened in the last month. It really is time for a good family update.

About a month ago, Darren was presented with the possibility of getting involved this fall as a teaching assistant with a few theology classes at the University of Aberdeen. We were suddenly faced with the idea extending our stay here.

Shortening all the drama and stress of the last few weeks, we are staying in Aberdeen until Christmas break, instead of moving back to the States in September. We are sad to delay our reunion with family, but know this is a great opportunity ... and it is only three extra months.

The next month looks to be totally crazy for us, but God always proves himself faithful, as he did with all the details for our extended stay...
  • The kids get out of school for the summer on June 29.
  • We say goodbye to two of our best friends on July 2 -- both families are moving away on the same day.
  • We will be moving to a new flat on July 3 -- circumstances made it impossible to stay in our current flat.
  • And this new baby boy will be joining our family sometime in the next 2 to 4 weeks.
In other news, the kids are doing great. Joshua just received a special award of merit for his hard work and outstanding attitude at school this last year (proud mom has to brag a little), only two were given in his class.

Abigail is so excited about next school year; she gets to go into P1 (kindergarten) instead of staying in preschool. This was a hard decision for me because they start kids in school a year younger here than in the States, but she was ready to move on.

I am feeling third-trimester tired these days, but overall I am doing well. Our new little boy is still growing well. We have another ultrasound next week to confirm that all is well. The doctor anticipates that I will deliver early based on my history, so this new baby will probably arrive around July 8 - 15, even though I'm not due until July 22.

Darren is working hard on his thesis, trying to get as much done as possible before the baby comes. He also has a great opportunity to give a paper at a conference about theology in Galatians on July 11 (pray the baby doesn't come that day).

So, life keeps moving, but in all the craziness, God is faithful!

Joshua's Sports Day

Last week Joshua's school held their annual Sports Day. Because of the Olympics in London this year, the school themed their sports activities after the Olympics. The kids were all assigned countries and competed together through a series of events.

As the event started, the teams paraded in holding flags from their country that they made in school. Joshua was on the team from Lithuania.

Joshua was very enthusiastic about all the events. I love his expression while kicking the ball. He threw his entire body into it.

Other events included the hurdles (jumping over short cones), the bean bag toss, the relay race and the hoop jumping.

Abigail and Daddy were cheering him on the entire time. What a great day!

Week 34

I can hardly believe how quickly the last few months have passed. This little baby boy is now 34 weeks old and getting ready to come in the next 6 weeks.

It has been a blessing to have a few months where food looked good again and I have been able to eat. The last two weeks I started experiencing more heart burn than I remember with my previous pregnancies, but at least that is easier to treat.

This baby boy feels bigger than my other two kids, and I know I am getting bigger, too. He also moves -- I mean really moves, full on somersaults -- all the time, more that the other two as well.

We had another ultrasound scan last week and everything still looks good. He is still growing consistently and is happy and healthy.

Because of my history, I will be visiting the midwife every week from here until delivery to make sure all is well. We will also have another ultrasound scan at 37 weeks. The OB thinks I will probably have this baby a few weeks early based on when the other two kids were born. As long as all is well, I do not mind having this baby a little sooner.

Joshua and Abigail are so excited about our baby joining the family. We are excitedly praying for a happy, healthy in a few weeks!

Enjoying the Sun

This has been an extremely cold and wet and gray spring here in Aberdeen. We've had almost no sun for weeks, and been experiencing hail, mixed rain and snow, and just lots of cold rain. Except for a few days in early March, it has not gotten above about 45 degrees at all. Needless to say, it has not been a nice spring.

Then the sun came out and everything changed. For the few days we have enjoyed summer-like weather with warm temperatures (high 60's -- which is about as warm as it gets) and beautiful sunny skies. We have been spending all our time outside.

Just a few of the highlights...

We've enjoyed lots of water play in the paddle pool and water table with friends.

We've eaten picnic lunches and dinners on the King's College campus with friends.

Today I took Joshua out of school for his lunch break so he could come play in the water with Abigail and friends. He was so surprised, but thrilled with the opportunity.

After school today we went down to the beach to play in the sand and water. We had hours of fun! The kids were exhausted and fell asleep very quickly tonight. The above picture is the only one I got at the beach today on my phone... the camera batteries were dead.

I forgot to apply sun screen to myself after so diligently protecting the kids. My arms are still bright pink from the first day in the sun.

What a glorious week this has been! The forecast says we have at least a few more days to soak in the sun. Maybe this means we will have a nice summer. One can hope...

Happy Spring!

28 Weeks

I have reached the third trimester of this pregnancy and am finally feeling well enough to enjoy food again. I have quickly gained back the lost weight from being so sick, and added several pounds to it. It is so good to be feeling healthy again.

The kids are getting so excited about their soon coming baby brother. Joshua has been getting ready by playing games with and holding our friend's 6 month old. He so enjoys preparing for his role as big brother.  Abigail talks constantly of her new brother and wishes he could come a little sooner.

Darren is busy working away on the his thesis trying to finish as much as possible before the baby comes. Busy, long work days!

We are looking forward to the coming summer and more days spent outside. For now we get out between the rain showers and enjoy the spring daffodils. Looking forward to more happy days!

Menu Plan Monday

This has been a rough week. I have been fighting a cold that has turned into a very painful sinus infection. After a few days on antibiotics I am starting to find some relief and hope for a much better week. Last week's attempt at cooking did not go well, so we'll try again this week.

So here is a mostly repeated menu for the week...

Menu Plan Monday

Well, I am finally ready to try menu planning again. It didn't go so well last time, but that was 8 weeks ago. Now I am 26 weeks pregnant and I'm hoping that this nausea is really going to pass soon. I am having at least one good day each week and the nausea I am having doesn't require medication to keep my food down.

So here is the attempt at a menu for the week...

Yummy hummus!

Here is a simple hummus recipe that I like to make whenever I'm in the mood.

  • 2 Tbsp. ground sesame seed or tahini (I normally toast my own seeds under the broiler and grind them the best I can)
  • 2 gloves garlic
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1/4 tsp. cumin
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 3 Tbsp. lemon juice*
  • 1 15 1/2 ounce can chick peas**, drained (save the juice)
  • 1/4 cup of the juice from the chick peas

Put all into blender (except the juice from the peas) and blend until smooth (or use a hand blender and slowly add ingredients and water). For more moisture, add some of the extra chick pea juice or water until you get the thickness you like.

*The lemon juice makes this a little zesty. If you like it blander (for children), you can use a little less.

**Or 1 cup dried chick peas, reconstituted per package directions

Another Tooth Gone

Joshua has lost another tooth this week.

He came home from school one day telling me another he didn't finish his lunch because his tooth was too loose. By the following morning the tooth had fallen out.

Doesn't he look so cute with the big gap. There is just something very classic about the look of missing your top front teeth.

My little boy is getting so big!

20 Week Ultrasound

On Monday this week we had out 20 week ultrasound scan of the baby.

At this scan they measure the baby's growth and check the heart, spine, internal organs, more to see that everything is developing well and on schedule.

This is also the scan where you often find out the gender of the baby. However, here in Aberdeen it is their policy NOT to tell you the gender of the baby.

I am not entirely sure where this policy came from, but this is the only place in the UK that this policy exists (as far as I am aware). I have heard rumors that it was to decrease the number of pregnancies terminated over gender, but I have no idea if this is true.

All that to say, unless we pay out of pocket for a private scan, we are going to be surprised on the gender of our baby #3.

Part of me thinks the surprise is fun, but part of me really likes the idea of preparing for a specific gender with clothes and things, not to mention picking out names and being mentally prepared.

For now I can say that our baby is healthy and growing right on schedule.

And because of our history, we'll get to see the baby again at two additional scans that are scheduled for 30 weeks and 34 weeks just to keep track of progress.

Check out picture #4. The baby is arching his/her neck backward as if stretching. The baby did this several times during the scan so the technician gave us a picture of it.

And I love the shot of the feet in the last picture. So precious!

It was a great blessing to see the baby again and laugh at how active he/she was throughout the entire scan. Wonder if that means we're in for a really active baby?

We have reached the half way point and are excited as we count down the weeks until baby is born!

Abigail's 4th Birthday

Abigail turned 4 back in January. In the midst of my horrid morning sickness, my good friend Emily offered to host her party.

Abigail wanted a chef, princess party. All the little kids came over dressed in their funnest fancy dress (dress up) and everyone got to wear aprons and chefs hats to decorate their own cupcakes.

What a fun party we had! All the pictures are up online in Abigail's 4th Birthday album.

Menu Plan Monday

Last week did not go so well with the meals. Nothing sounded good and I had a hard time making anything. But I'm hopeful that this week will go better. I am now 18 weeks pregnant, so this nausea has to lift soon, right?!

17 Weeks and Kicking!

That's right! We're 17 weeks along today. I figured it was about time to post a baby bump picture.

I started showing at about 9 weeks and outgrew all my clothes by 13 weeks. Things have moved faster with baby #3 than in previous pregnancies, but that is to be expected.

Still struggling with nausea and food aversions, but it was at least 20 weeks with the other two, so I am starting to look for things to change in the next few weeks. Please keep this in your prayers.

Otherwise, baby and I are both healthy and growing right on schedule.

I felt the baby kick for the first time last week and look forward to feeling those little movements more often as baby gets bigger.

Baby is now about the size of an avocado and has developed all its organs. It also has all 10 fingers and all 10 toes, and looks completely like a baby, just smaller.

Joshua and Abigail continue to ask for updates on how the baby is doing, and Joshua especially is very focused on the due date and age progression of the baby.

Have a great week!

Menu Plan Monday

After weeks of being sick and not posting a menu, I feel the time has come to finally get back to feeding my family. I'm still pretty nauseous, but its getting easier to prep food. So, here is our first week back on a schedule of some sorts. I'll let you know how it goes.

On to the menu for the week...

Update on Life!

This is a shot of Joshua from Guy Fawkes night (a.k.a. Fireworks Night) back in November holding his first sparkler. One of the many pictures I have not shared yet on the blog.

My poor blog and readers deserve an update... there just doesn't feel like much to be said. Life is in a routine mode right now with school and weekend schedules running our days.

Baby Sumner #3 is 15 weeks along and still making me as sick as ever. The doctor finally took pity on me and has me on anti-nausea medication, mostly because of dehydration and weight loss. Now I keep food down, but just have the side effects (mostly being even more tired than usual).

Darren is writing in full speed right now, hoping to get enough done before the baby comes. He works into the evenings most days, putting in about 10 hours a day. I am excited to see him working with such momentum again after being forced by other obligations to take a break for several weeks (including taking care of the entire family because mommy was too sick to get up most days).

Joshua is thriving at school and so excited to finally be able to read. He is still building his sight words, but can figure out many words by context. It is pretty fun to have him reading books to me!

Abigail is loving her preschool as well. She gets so excited about going every day. Her favorite activities include painting, water play, song and dance (you should have seen her scottish ceilidh dancing on Robert Burns Day) and play dough. Who wouldn't love it!?!

The weather has been warm for a winter here, with only one brief snowfall and the temperatures staying above freezing most days. The daylight is slow returning and we now have over 7.5 hours of light each day. I'm just waiting for all the castles to open again so we can do a little more tourism before our time here comes to an end.

And that is our life right now!

Baby Sumner

We're gonna have a baby!
Yes, that's right, Sumner Baby #3 is on the way!

We had our 'dating scan' today where they measure the baby and decide my official due day (a whole week earlier than I had expected).

Based on how big the baby is already our official due date is July 22. I am 13 weeks along and at the end of my first trimester.

Check back again soon to follow more baby news and the continuing adventures of our family. I will try to be a little more faithful at my updates.
